Learning the Hebrew language does not only mean mastering the letters, grammar and words. In order to really understand the language, it is important to get to know the culture and customs of the people who speak it. The Jewish people have rich traditions and customs that have been respected for thousands of years. Below is an overview of the most famous Jewish customs that are worth knowing.
Shabbat – day of rest
Shabbat is the most important day in Jewish tradition. It starts on Friday evening at sunset and lasts until Saturday evening. During Shabbat, families gather, light special candles, say prayers and eat a festive dinner. It is a time of peace, rest and dedication to family and spirituality.
Bar Mitzvah and Bat Mitzvah
These are special ceremonies that mark the transition of boys (at age 13) and girls (at age 12) to the age of responsibility towards their faith and community. At this celebration, the child reads from the Torah for the first time in front of the community, and the festive event usually continues with joy and celebration with family and friends.
Jewish weddings
A traditional Jewish wedding is full of symbolism. The newlyweds stand under a canopy called hupa, što predstavlja njihov novi dom. Na kraju ceremonije mladoženja razbija čašu, što podsjeća na razaranje Hrama u Jerusalimu i ujedno simbolizuje sreću i obnovu života.
Kosher food
Kosher dietary rules are part of Jewish tradition and culture. They determine which foods can and cannot be eaten, as well as how they are prepared. For example, meat and dairy products are never combined in the same meal, and only certain types of meat and fish are considered "clean."
Jevrejski praznici
Pasha – the holiday of the Jews' exodus from Egypt and freedom.
Hanukkah – the holiday of light, celebrated by lighting candles on a candlestick hanukiji.
Yom Kippur - Day of Atonement, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar.
Purim – a joyful holiday that reminds of the salvation of the Jewish people in Persia.
